Seems like you should have the choice of either the points lost or paying the fees and getting the points and FNC back.

I would hang up and call again, don't mention anything about insurance and just inquire if there is any way to keep your points but ok with paying cancellation fees.

I would personally only pursue this if I really did want/need to cancel ... hard to tell from your post if that is the case or you are just covering your bases.
I have absolutely no intention of cancelling this trip. Very much looking forward to it! It's just that we have very elderly parents and others with serious medical conditions in our extended family, so I like to know what we're in for if something were to happen last minute and we had cancel. I usually buy trip insurance to cover emergency medical and evacuation, and if it's an expensive trip, we sometimes buy cancellation coverage too. In this case, it seems there is no way to insure for cancellation of the actual room since trip insurance won't insure lost points. I haven't called the actual hotel myself since it is an expensive call so the diamond desk called for me and gave me the above information.
