CWL is my nearest airport, so for KLM is another option.. arriving AMS 8.25am for the 12.30 CX flight, leaving AMS at 9am on the return. Are KLM any less likely to check luggage through to a final destination because they're not OW? It's a more expensive option, but less hassle.
From SYD to UK, should be no issue as CX does check through to interline airlines. KLM at AMS is one of them (https://www.cxagents.com/content/dam...I)_Summary.pdf)
Though KLM may not transfer your baggage thorugh out of CWL (https://www.klm.com/information/airport/transfers)

4.25 hrs should be sufficient if airside transit only. It's up to you to decide how much time is comfortable for transiting on separate tickets
