On the way back, if on a 125 ticket, with a BA basic economy fare, technically I think it's a no.
But in my limited experience (twice I've been in a similar situation), on the way back, if checking in with AA at the airport for an AA flight with an onward BA flight, yes it's likely that you will be able to check all the way with no charge. Just show your ba gold card to the agent.
Maybe I was lucky, I'm not so sure though, as I'm not normally lucky.
I would be prepared to pay, just in case.
