AA usually defaults to their mileage plan and does not credit them to AS. What you have to do if this happens is have proof of trips taken (paper ticket) and relinquish the miles on AA.
When you say paper ticket, do you mean a printout of your reservation? Your boarding pass? Because getting actual paper tickets is
probably not easy anymore for routine travel.
I just save reservation confirmations, ticket receipts, and boarding passes as PDFs and screenshots to a folder containing all information pertaining to a trip. I like having a paper boarding pass for various reasons (different thread/topic), but getting retro credit isn’t one of them.
