Call or email. In general, I have found that a follow up email goes into black hole, but calling results in someone looking at the overdue retro request in real time with me on the phone and then usually either directly credits the missing miles or files a request to a supervisor to do so. Obviously/fortunately this is based on only a handful of data points, so YMMV.
