As far as knee knocking? Simply pull your legs in, angle them to your left and viola, no bruising. Without being able to drop my derrière into 1C, my legs must be pulled in and wedged against the back of the seat in front of me for the duration of the flight. No thanks, I have no issue contorting during boarding. Cheers!

I have tried the angle legs toward 1A before, but then, without having to take uncomfortable postures, my right shoulder/upper body would protrude in the aisle and still getting knocked about.
It's not just wheely bags to the knees I find you have to watch out for in 1C (and to an extent, D). Backpackers have a habit of standing next to row 1, swinging round to their left to talk to their travelling companion behind them while everyone files down the aisle. I've had to dodge a backpack to the face on a few occasions.
I've observed a couple of novel ways people avoid this, including standing against the bulkhead or window at 1A, and one guy who clearly knew what he was doing who had stowed away the table at 1B to sit there until the boarding scrum had died down.
