It's true. I've used my Magenta Max plan all over Asia and haven't had any problems other than the fact it's slow! The service works, but latency is very high since all data is routed back to the US. A local SIM is still desirable for performance, but it's tough to beat TMO's convenience.

I suspect it'll be the same as TMO as AT&T routes all traffic back to the US. That's how it gets around China's firewall. However, that severely affects latency. This is part of the GSM standard and no way around it. If you care about performance, you'll need a Chinese SIM.
