There are actually a number of 3-class planes on this route, 763, 777 and 747. It's very inconsistent though, and because of the above mentioned issues, you need to check the seatmap to be sure of what kind of plane you will be on. I try to plan around them, but they will often change. It's the best use of 4x500mi upgrades IMHO.
