I have cancelled flights that did not come back up. I often book flights far in advance on a £1 as a backup. When things firm up I usually cancel that one and book one for cheaper (Avios).
One time, that flight did not turn up and luckily there are alternatives on the same day albeit time wasnt ideal - but I know what was on the cards when I did that... so now I just suck it up if I really wanted to keep the time.

They have met their obligation to release 4 seats on a flight and if they do or do not come back to inventory will be down to some algorithm we are not party to.

That said if you are traveling to Sydney on the 20th December I think it is guaranteed they will not come back. Mallorca in January you might stand some chance.

I have not cancelled many avoid flights but none that I recall have ever come back into inventory.

What you mostly can do is call up and ask the agent. If the ticket can be modified they will do it for you. If.
