Carrefour did enter the Hong Kong market -- they had four stores -- but had problems getting the right space and dealing with distributors. So they closed up and left about 20 years ago.

A very unhappy tale and there were reasonable suspicions at the time that they'd been frozen out by the local guys.

In any event, their experience has pretty much warded Walmart etc off Hong Kong.
