They would've individually only been silvers or maybe one of them a Gold. Doing the 'combined acct' activity, they make Gold easily, and occasionly hit that Diamond level.
I like it that HH does this. Other programs won't.
It's my understanding HHonors quit allowing "joint" accounts a couple years ago. You used to be able to combine the accounts via the HHonors web site, but now it only works if the accounts have the same names and addresses on them ie the OP can still combine his, but NOT his and his wifes.
Existing joint accounts were grandfathered.
