This might be the factor that changes the ordinary award cancellation mechanism.
Though a few weeks ago when we canceled a plain all AA metal award booked online and canceled online, the miles did not return for a day versus in the past the miles came back literally within seconds, or after logged out and logged back in. When it still was missing I called AA to inquire. While we were still on the phone the agent said the miles were in the account now. It wasn't there when I started calling. Refund took several days as usual.
In 2022 an award was canceled but nothing ever happened. I waited 2 weeks then called. Agent said for whatever reason the auto-refund box wasn't checked, and she processed the refund. Now, this was so weird or stupid because again it was a straight AA metal award booked and canceled online - there wasn't ANY refund box to check in the whole cancellation process!
FWIW, in both incidents, the awards were originated from Europe. The one in 2022 was from Milan, and the one a few weeks ago was from Munich.
