are there ATMs from small lesser known companies which charge high fees? I know they all do in Thailand but curious if there are ATMs in bars, convenience stores and so on that are best avoided.

The ones you quote are basically the top six banks and by far the most common. Note that SCBX is the parent company of Siam Commercial Bank, so essentially the same. Personally I use Kasikornbank (locally known as Kbank) for my banking activities.
I think withdrawal fees are similar across all, and probably so are FX rates.
ATMs are typically either found in conjunction with 7-11s, bank branches, malls and supermarkets, or in some cases standalone.
From a cautiousness perspective, maybe aim for those and not ones near certain types of nightlife.
