Why would they need to do that? As long as they change the LHR-EWR flight before its scheduled departure, which can most likely be done online, they’ll just pay the change fee and any fare difference, which could be minimal if the new flight isn’t full since this is the return leg of a round-trip.

I think the later flight is a bit too risky but the 4 hour connection should have enough leeway unless the flight is outright cancelled.
