I don't understand why there's so much uncertainty. It doesn't seem like a complex travel situation.
I find generally in this kind of situation it brings better peace of mind not to try and inquire with the airlines. Poorly trained customer service agents have a reasonably high likelihood of 1: Not knowing the answer and 2: Making up something to compensate...
