I could not agree more. I have definitely been burned by not checking in on the app and watching all the better normal rooms get sucked up by people that arrived earlier or went ahead with online check-in. You can always go to the front desk when you arrive and ask for upgrade options. I also do not think there is any excuse for any hotel to make you wait past check-in time for your room, especially a 5 start property.
His original room was available upon arrival, he checked in via the app. He waited for the upgraded room, likely at his request for an upgrade, which he called a downgrade believing it was smaller.
