We need some context here, like arrival time. If OP got there at 4PM, and asked for an upgrade, it's possible they had to expedite the cleaning of a late checkout room.
If anything, I've been allowed to check in extremely early, like 8AM and don't see any other posters who've had a delayed check in time like that.
