I asked if they would extend free breakfast to the Titanium guest despite the room being booked with my free night certs, and the answer was a clear no. From my understanding, if I burn points for a guest they will get my benefits (including free breakfast) as per Marriott rules, whereas if burning free nights it's at the property's discretion. Small technicality, but why the difference? Anyway, while the hotel is perfectly entitled to say no, when a repeat AMB guest is coming along with a first time Tit, perhaps it would be wise to give a good taste of the hotel to draw them again in the future? Short sighted. So I told them that I was disappointed, cancelled and booked elsewhere. They did not even bother responding to my e-mail after that.
As for the comment above, yes many other hotels in Bangkok are generous with suite upgrades and even premium suite upgrades. But in fairness, the OP mentioned being Platinum so unlike the other nickel & diming behavior by StR, for the subject of upgrade alone I can understand they offer the Astor suite with an upcharge. Being Platinum in Bangkok these days does not stand out given the number of elites checking in every day. So while StR does not shine in a lot of ways, I am not sure this one is much of an offense.
They wouldn't upgrade this Ambassador beyond a terrible Metropolitan Suite, and we all know how special I am (sarcasm). So, I don't think it has to do with Platinum for this property, specifically. I think they're just cheap and stingy!
