It is only valuable if it is used. It is of no value to the GF (or to me), granting it to her today. It is of no value to my mother, who so far as I know, has zero flights planned this year.
It might be valuable to a casual acquaintance in September if they have to start flying weekly to see a sick relative or something.
It's not like I'm out of pocket delaying a decision.
