Why? They get fined under UK/EC261 if the docs presented at check-in turn out to be valid and they don't oblige (i.e. an IDB that cannot be justified). Also see below.

I can do this too with a through ticket during transit airside. Run to the arrivals immigration desk and make my asylum claim there.

If this is a risk, a transit visa or ETA should be required (e.g. upcoming UKETA even for AUS flying HKG-LHR-EU). ZA does not.
