I protested that I couldn't drive something that big (doing my best English little old lady impression); I was eventually offered an alternative and when I asked what sort of vehicle it was I was basically told to take it or leave it. Can't remember model but it was an SUV a bit bigger than a RAV4.
I had a similar experience last year at Avis in Little Rock, Arkansas. I'd requested a small car, but literally the only car they had available when I got there was a giant SUV, the kind of vehicle you'd normally see in North Dakota with MAGA bumper stickers. They thought I'd be happy to accept a vehicle bigger than the one I had booked, but I really did not want it. It was probably four times the size of anything I'd ever driven before.
Luckily, two German women were just returning a "compact" (i.e. big, but not as big as an SUV) car while I was there and I was able to take that. But it's put me off hiring from small, backwater locations.
