I often have this issue with CX OLCI. I've given up on it now in general and just check in at the airport.

For travel into Hong Kong in particular, this is true. For passengers with tickets ending in Hong Kong, airlines rarely if ever (1 in 100 flights) ask for proof on onward travel or residency if you're entering HK on a passport that has 3-6 months visa free stay. For example nothing in my passport says I'm entitled to live in Hong Kong. Yet, at the same time no airline ever asks for proof of residence (HKID) for travel terminating in Hong Kong.
