Thompson Nashville - Master Review Thread
As there is no dedicated thread for the Thompson Nashville (mods feel feel to create one?) I'll post some thoughts here.
Stayed for five nights in Jan 2024 using points and a TSU. The suite upgrade confirms into the Thompson Suite which has a partition but not full doors/walls dividing the living and sleeping areas. I believe the next-step-up Executive Suite may be a true suite.
The hard product in general is good but not great. The living area furniture is really not comfortable at all, and I was surprised by the poor pillow quality on the bed. The wet bar is nice and having flat screen TVs on each side of the room divider is convenient. There are two small closets, one at the suite entrance and one by the bed, the latter containing a safe. The bathroom is probably the best part of the suite with a great walk-in shower with multiple shower heads, good water pressure and temperature, and a large soaking tub for those who take baths. Toiletries are provided in large bottles and I seem to recall seeing a note somewhere that taking one with you at checkout incurs a $50 charge.
The Thompson provides a reusable glass water bottle in the room and filling stations (still and sparkling) on each floor. In theory I like this; in practice I liked this less because housekeeping never replaced nor cleaned the water bottle, which was pretty gnarly after five days of use. Also, there was only one water bottle in the room - are multiple guests supposed to share? Other used glassware was also never replaced. Turndown service (not sure if that's a Globalist, suite, or all guests thing?) was appreciated but inconsistent in terms of towels being replaced, chocolates being left, etc.
Being right in the Gulch neighborhood the Thompson is subject to the impacts of its urban setting. This included, at various times, emergency vehicles, car alarms, delivery and trash trucks, and an argument on the street. Be prepared for the possibility of being awakened at any hour. On the flip side, there are many restaurants and stores in the immediate area, and the tourist track on Broadway etc. is only a 20ish minute walk away.
The rooftop LA Jackson bar was definitely a disappointment and not just because of the winter weather. There is a large central bar, but no barstools, so it's a standing only affair unless you elect for hostess seating at one of the tables. I gave up on getting a table after several minutes of being ignored by the waitstaff. On a nice summer evening the view from the outdoor section of roof would be very nice. If you are not 25 or an influencer, you will probably feel out of place here.
In contrast the service at the Marsh House was consistently great, as was the food. I ate breakfast every day (brunch runs until 2pm I think, Globalist credit is $30/pp up to four people) and all the options I had were tasty. I also ate dinner one evening and had drinks on a couple of others, again without complaint. It is true as previous posters have noted that you don't earn points credit for room charges at Marsh House.
I was disappointed by the quality of the service in the lobby. Even over a five day period I can only remember one desk agent proactively looking at me and saying "good morning" or "welcome back", etc. as I walked by. The concierge staff in particular kept their eyes in their iPhones at all times even with guests milling about the check in area. One day I requested room service come while I would be out for a ~5 hour period and it didn't. On check out day housekeeping knocked on the door even after confirming my late check out with the front desk that morning. Early on during my stay breakfast and destination charges were appearing on my folio, which were removed after I pointed it out but only following a discussion with an agent about whether Globalists are exempt from the destination fee (we are, as his manager subsequently informed him). Valet staff did not offer to help with luggage loading/unloading at either arrival or departure. I received no survey to complete regarding my stay.
Would I stay here again? Probably not and would opt for the Grand Hyatt instead. In fairness the Thompson is catering to a younger/hipper clientele than what I represent so perhaps they'd be just as happy not to have me back. I did walk past the Holston House and that immediate area is slightly sketchier.
