Indeed. And to try to be clear: if you do it before a leg that leg needs availability even if you're not changing it. So presumably your long-haul now only has business availability hence the agent had to refare into that. If you call after getting to SEA, you should only need V on the new leg you want. ExpertFlyer is showing some space on the early two departures to SFO, and a few options for SJC. OAK is zeroed out on the two remaining flights for 19/1 - probably because the late flight is cancelled.
The only issue is I can't recall if the inbound can be left untouched, or if that needs current availability.
