To give an example, I have DFW - MAD - BER booked with IB with the long-haul being in Business and the shorter leg in Economy. There were business seats available using Avios on the MAD - BER sector but because of married segment conditions / availability I couldn't book DFW - MAD - BER with both flights in business.

Thanks! This is what I suggested to the (now 3) agents. They say, however,, I only need availability for MAD-OPO and they have no availability in either J or Y for that segment and if I try to book online it will likely error out — which I doubt. So I'll have to book the separate (later in the day) ticket as it indeed appears to be married-segment-related issues. Appreciate your help though!

PS. A shame IB stopped accepting check-through of bags even on IB metal separate bookings. I'd be more than happy to pay for a revenue ticket.
