Although I must say that in the past I have also been victim of non-upgrade and had to pretty much "argue" to get the Diamond benefits......
It does not matter when you check in, the staff have been told to tell guests that rooms are not available and that the hotel is full. unless you speak to a manager, the check in staff do not have the authority to move you to an upgraded room.
