Is this for one trip to the NY Metro area, or multiple trips? I would look into obtaining a NY-issued E-Z Pass, as that will give you lower rates at NYC bridges and tunnels compared to E-Z Pass transponders issued by other jurisdictions.

There are E-Z Pass retailers in New York where you can buy a transponder over the counter.

I have one issued by the NYS Thruway Authority which has no maintenance fees. Those are not sold in NYC, but are available in Yonkers, just North of NYC. Not sure if the ones sold in NYC have a maintenance fee.
