Get yourself a nice place with a view over the Gulf - Posillipo, the Vomero I'd say - and just enjoy it. You can also go to Pompeii or Ercolano, or if you really want to hate humankind why not Capri or Sorrento (just kidding, but I will admit that there's something that irks me deeply about tourists in the summer).
You can dump your car at the airport in NAP and from there just public transport it. Driving in Naples is messy, mostly because of the narrow roads I think, but having driven there & in Rome I don't think it's any more stressful than the motorways in Houston.
Oh, well, I'm not opposed to more Rome and less Naples LOL. I think teen might prefer Rome anyway bc of the sites he has studied in history. I wish we had time to go to Capri. Or elsewhere for that matter (esp bc I see some Hyatt point nights I could've used). So now to decide if we just do Pompeii with rental car and drive onwards to Rome for drop off. Would be nice not to have to train and change hotels, but I don't want to miss out on Naples if it's worth the hassle.
