Welcome to British Airways. The paid seat selection policy for premium cabins is frustrating and - I personally feel - ridiculous. I'd argue that if you buy a business class seat (or use miles to get it), you should be able to pick your actual seat immediately.

And yes, you're right. You could end up feeling the need to buy the seats and then losing money if your plans change. British Airways is just fine with that scenario!
