Even mobile check-in is no guarantee -- I was recently invited via email to do express check-in online, received a QR code and instructions to scan it at a kiosk along with my ID, and when I did that, it said I had to see the front desk. And then when I asked the front desk, they said "oh, because [I forget the reason already] you have to come to the front desk." "So why did I get an e-mail asking me to check-in remotely and receive a QR code telling me to obtain my keys from a kiosk?" "..."

and nothing tricky either, it was just me, on a one-person booking. The reason they claimed was either the offer I was booked under, or that I'm Diamond, neither of which makes much sense, but even if that were legitimately the reason, you'd think their IT could be smart enough not to send me the invite email or issue me the QR code in the first place...
