I haven't been able to make changes after departure. You just forfeit your miles if you cancel.
IIRC you can make a change before your trip,. If you tried to cancel a leg of your journey, you could probably do that, but you'd run a high risk that the agent will recalculate your ticket as an one way award which costs more miles.
