It does seem odd - the middle two legs of my round trip to Australia - so BKK /SYD & MEL /BKK - were not automatically credited. BKK/SYD was added on when I got back to London with no difficulty. However, worth noting there was no FF number on those boarding passes, even though It was effectively one ticket and the FF numbers for myself and my wife were both in the Thai system before departure. My wife's miles were all credited manually (issue with a forgotten password, so UA resolved that for me and just entered the credits).
