I'm very skeptical of the baggages, especially when taking last leg on non OW airline, but, it is life.
Actually now realized, it is non-status plebeian flight on Delta, will be interesting to experience the american domestic flying hell.
Little late but best option would definitely be to request your (now offloaded) baggage to be returned and recheck it the next day. It might be a wait to get the baggage back but probably avoids lots of unnecessary stress down the road.
