there is no prize...just an opportunity. Maybe you were having second thoughts about your planned travel day and something came up - but you didn't want to pay to change it. They just blanket the plane with the offer, and hope someone bites.
It seems like the number of offers has gone up in the past year or so. I think they are being proactive for even the smaller likelihood of issues. It doesn’t cost AA anything to let people shift flights around, and it makes the passengers happy.
Some people prefer to earn vouchers. To me, getting to not pack my suitcase and stay in my NYC midtown hotel for an extra night, fit in a workout at the gym, make extra plans for dinner with a friend, and then actually taking in a play I hadn’t planned to see, was worth far more than lugging my stuff to the airport only to wait around to be bumped and then get 6 hours of sleep at some Days Inn in Jamaica.
