Vegas... local Hertz locations, my 2c
Thought I'd share my observation of a particular noticeable change in local (non-airport) Vegas Hertz location pricing/availability which has caught my attention. Your experience may well differ, this is mine, my opinion, fwiw...
I'm a long time frequent renter (PC) for short periods of time (less than a week) in Vegas (live in Vegas, haven't owned a car in many many years, travel often), so I keep a close eye on local car rental price trends as I use rental cars periodically to get around (along w Uber/Lyft) when I'm in town for extended periods. Rarely do I ever rent from any locations on the strip (I generally avoid that area, too many tourists), downtown or the airport, as they all usually have elevated car rental rates (although at random times the airport for whatever reason can show decent rates just when you think that's going to be impossible, that rival off-airport rates), and those locations are not really convenient for me. My sources for pricing by rental location come from weekly checks on the AAA site, Autoslash and other pricing sites, excluding for comparison purposes, any available CDP or promotional codes that I may happen to use when I do ultimately book a quote. Since Autoslash and Hertz are no longer kissin' cousins and aren't foolin' around anymore in the back seat, Autoslash's Hertz quoted rates are no longer close to where they use to be, but nevertheless one can still notice changes in the prevailing rates by location when quotes are received from one week to the next, not only from Autoslash/Priceline pricing, but other pricing sites as well. And I do notice a difference.
What prompted this post is a significant change that I immediately began to notice several weeks ago, involving 2 locations in particular, as it has impacted my rental behavior. As to why the change, only the Hertz gawd knows...
If you exclude the airport, the strip and downtown, that leaves you with basically 3 Hertz locations in what I consider the "central" area, and a number in the outlying areas (significantly outlying from the central area).
My "central area" includes the University Center Drive location, the location at 1815 E Sahara, and the location at 5205 W Sahara. The outlying areas include N Gibson Road, Rancho Drive, Centennial Parkway, Rampart Blvd and East Craig Road. When one goes for price checks, for the same dates and times, it's always interesting to see some Hertz local locations show up on some pricing sites, and not on others, for the same search parameters. The outlying locations mentioned above, routinely show the lowest rates, both in the past and continues to be true for the present. They are fairly far out, however, as much as 11 miles out, so depending on your needs and logistics, pricing may be trumped by other considerations (distance doesn't work for my rental needs).
The location on University Center Drive is very close to the airport. Signage is lacking, customer service at that location is sub-par (my op), it handles Hertz, Dollar and Thrifty. I try to avoid that location because of the poor customer service I've experienced in the past, and the seemingly disorganized facility. It's rarely a price winner. For a car rental facility, it is somewhat odd where it's located at, across from UNLV, right on Paradise road. I'm amazed it's still there after all these years. It appears rather disorganized quite frankly, more like a parking lot.
The Hertz location at 1815 E Sahara is my "go to" location; if at all possible, that's the location I've most used in the past. It's accessible off Sahara, a main street, not too far from the strip, with bus stops near by. Customer service there, from the manager to all employees on down, is superior. Perhaps it's because I rent from there so often, but they have been genuinely terrific and it's a pleasure to go there. A facility that adjoins next door sells Hertz cars unlike other local locations. They tend to have fewer small cars for rental. When others ask me for an example of the best customer service I've received from any business, this Hertz location comes to mind. When others paint the Hertz brand with one negative brush, I smile cause I know they don't know about this location.
The location at 5205 W Sahara, a Hertz location that also includes Dollar and Thrifty, is also easily accessible off Sahara, but on the west side, not too far out. From my own personal experience, it has the worst customer service I've ever experienced. Some years ago I posted here a particular crazy negative experience I experienced with the manager who was "off the reservation" who I ended up reporting to Hertz. From what I can gather from what I know, the customer service of the employees there, continue to bounce along the bottom of the ocean. If they told you they only have 1 car left so you'll have to take it, likely it's there version of made up inventory control (no surprise the "1 car" available tends to be an EV). If issues arrive, reps claim to have no authority, the manager never seems to be around. They are known to email you your rental contract a day or more in advance of your reservation (and charge your card)--perhaps you think that's "helpful", but if you want to cancel your non-binding reservation, good luck unwinding that mess cause now there's a rental contract floating around with your name on it, your bank charged, and a car assigned which you've never seen.
As long as I can remember, when one went for car rental quotes, whether on AAA, Autoslash or other sites, from a pricing standpoint, the 1815 E Sahara location and the one at 5205 W Sahara would both come up virtually the same. About 3 weeks or ago, something changed. Now. rarely does one get available quotes for the 1815 E Sahara location (and the rates are higher), the 5205 W Sahara location dominates the listings, for Hertz, Dollar and Thrifty, and they are usually lower, and sometimes dramatically lower than other local locations. If one searches for a particular area in Vegas, even the airport, and you start filtering for other listings, 5205 will pop up, even on Autoslash Priceline quotes. Who's steering business to that location all of a sudden, and omitting 1815 and why? Not holding my breath for an answer. Of all the locations to steer business to...
No idea what is going on, but consider this my 2c version of a public advisory, avoid the local 5205 W Sahara location, even if the rates are less expensive. If you had an ok experience there in the past, and happen to have a decent experience in the future, really happy for ya. Just passing on from my own experience and that shared with me by others here in Vegas, who threw the dice one too many times.
And a final note, a couple of local car rental locations, non-Hertz, that are most overlooked (hidden?) for their convenient locations, I'd nominate the Enterprise location in the Westin off Flamingo, and the Sixt location at the Howard Hughes Center also just off Flamingo, which I only recently discovered exists. Re Budget local rental car locations, that probably deserves a post by itself... as does those who persist renting from any of the car locations @ LAS that require 2 shuttles to access, like Fox (w/o regard how many stars anyone gives them). Just don't do it!
Cheers!
