Yes I could, but i get more points doing it with AA than with QR and the business class fare was better priced via AA. Added to the business trips I have to take in Feb and March, I will attain gold status with AA once I complete this Maldives trip in April.
That is going back to the same answer that JJfefrey gave about choosing based on earning potential as opposed to booking AA due to living in the USA and having no status with AA
If all else is equal, I would suggest booking with QR if flying on QR - in case of disruptions, it can be easier dealing directly with the operating carrier rather than being passed back to the issuing carrier
