if you really want to do that, you still can in some cases - I believe in most cases UA and DL will let you cancel a flight booked via portal with them directly and the credit remains with them. That said, if you legitimately can’t find use for an annual $300 travel credit, then I’m not sure a travel card with a close to $400 AF is really right for you, as discussed a bit further upthread. Like I said, the requirement to use the portal is not ideal, and some of my planned trips are a bit too complicated to want to deal with a third-party for, but there are many others that it works just as well for, so it’s easy for me to use.
if you have to put so much effort into finding a way to use the credit, I’d suggest you might want to consider if this product really makes sense for you. I’m certainly not going to tell people how to spend their time, but I will say that my time is valuable enough that if I have to invest several hours into ‘gaming’ use of a credit, it’s just not worth it and I’m going to look elsewhere
