Considering every non-stop flight from CLT on American to Punta Cana for Saturday has stopped selling tickets means all the flights between those two airports are sold out and likely overbooked. I suspect there would be few no-shows on flights to a tropical destination on a Saturday During a Holiday Weekend.

Just to be clear, you are saying that they offered you $300 the day before the flight to change flights? When I have received these notices in the past, sometimes the offer was to change flights (sometimes even flights on a different date) for free and sometimes the offer was to put in a bid to give up my seat (at the gate, at the last minute, if they needed it) and a chance to choose another flight in advance if they needed my seat, but I have never been offered "sure thing" money in advance to switch flights.
