I prefer arriving in country with at least a small amount of the local currency say $50-$100 worth in smaller bills. I don't compare currency exchanges at home with what I can get at an ATM at my destination but what the exchange rates are at the airport. It is better get the smaller amount at home. If it runs out then I get more at a local ATM.
