I don't see why there should be a thought of compensation. It's a totally optional change. Email can be deleted along with all the other junk they send before trips.
I've noticed that sometimes changes to alternate airports are allowed, so maybe there are multiple booking thresholds that trigger additional flexibility and worth checking back if that can be helpful for you.
Also, if you book a connection when a nonstop is available and you receive the email (one of the connections exceeds whatever booking threshold is needed), you may be offered the nonstop. So that's nice.
