Aloha!
Did this on BA Miles LAX-HNL-SYD earlier in the year (total 75,000 BA Miles in Business with Honolulu weekend stopover, continuing on QF 747-300 of ancient stock).
The AA LAX-HNL two class aircraft is indeed "First" up front but very much like a Business Class service IMHO. It had, however, recently been reconfigured, according to AA. More of an "enhancement" I think.
As you will be aware AA Domestic First is a joke, except on their 777s, when compared to what European Airlines offer even in Club Europe for instance, and the Hawaii service is meant to be a hybrid between the international and the domestic service.
No seat back TVs, food average, flight attendants prehistoric, blue seats with leather patches, and I think less room throughout the plane (see 757 reference above). No amenity kit, either.
Often overbooked towards the end of the week, too.
You are right that FIRST is usually 3x base mileage, but there has been a special offer on this route for a while now, so maybe you should see if that's still on?
Hawaii is a great destination, have a great time!
