Just to report back - I indeed had to clear immigration and customs at GUM from KIX to TKK. However, I did NOT have to pick up my checked bag - it went straight through.
Also, I was able to go back to departure right away at 2am - it seems there are quite a few South Korean and Japanese flights during that time.
I spent a few hours in the Sagan Bisita lounge before moved to United Club at 4:30am. Sagan Bisita lounge has a shower stall in the restroom and a towel was provided.
