I certainly recommend trying for the free hotel, but I might suggest you don't want to stay in the hotel that they would choose for you. Also, can you get into Milan for dinner or something to make it worthwhile? Linate is only 12 minutes by train from the center of town.

They offered a refund, but with fares now being 1000-1500 more expensive per person for the same traveldates that was not in our interest.
We will arrive at about 22.00 hours, so a bit late to go into the city. We did visit Milano a few times already.
On the way back we have a seven hour layover during the night in Linate and for that I booked a hotel on our own dime as that was no surprise.
I already wrote ITA to ask about duty to care for this involuntary layover and after knowing their position, I will book or not book myself.
So I was curious how flexible or generous they were in these kind of situations.
