At least two full weeks from the posting date, but even then it can credit later when American Express' system does a sweep for missed transactions on earlier dates.

Thanks for the always helpful info, Mia. Two quick follow-ups:
1. Choosing the airline and then paying for the ticket can be done almost instantaneously, correct? As in, there shouldn't be a lag time between choosing the airline and then using the gift card + amex combo--just as long as the airline was chosen first.
2. If this does drag on--I think the wiki recommends almost 4-5 weeks of waiting--is it still kosher to ask about "benefit reimbursement" with an agent, or has more recent posts suggest it's just better to eat the cost so as not to upset the applecart?
