Our recent experience (Dec 2023 and Jan 2024) of this is that the check in staff insist on seeing the print out of the e-Visa and matching the details against your passport details. Same for the immigration people once you land in India.
Also note that there is a landing card to fill out. Staff on the ground insist that it is the airline's responsibility to give this to you but our airlines (BA, UL) never did. One staff member even claimed that an airline rep would be along shortly to hand out the cards. No cards (or pens) were available on the ground and nothing happened until a few passengers insisted that the staff go and get more cards. By the way, the phone number on the card has to be an Indian one so you should put the phone number of your hotel.
