I flew China Airlines based in Taiwan from the UK to Australia and back over Xmas. The Taipei to London leg took 16.5hr hours, nearly as long as the LHR-PER QF leg, due to the russian airspace ban. To be honest I didn't notice it.

Yes! I don't get the sparrows fart arrivals and then you have to stay up all day. Had a 6am arrival in Syd as a youngster but the hotel was't available til 3pm so walked the streets like a zombie till then. Now I try so hard to get evening arrivals so basically eat, shower and bed. Reduces jet lag so much I feel. BA and QF used to have late arrivals when they had more services many moons ago.

Re Middle East stop, I don't know why, but maybe because of many years of flying the route, I just didn't like the 6/7 hr leg to Dubai/Doha/Abu Dhabi. It feels to short to rest or sleep.
