Did anyone have issues being charged a fee for a no show with a "pay later" reservation recently?

I'm wondering because I was just about to book a pay later rate and looked into the terms and conditions (in the app in German, even though it's a rental at MCO).
There Avis clearly states that even with a pay later rate they will charge a no show fee. Now there's no indication that this is only valid in Europe even though the amount is only mentioned in some European currencies and the term "or in the local currency". This makes me guess that they'd make me pay the fee for a no show in the US too.
Maybe some of you have experience with this in any way.

Two years back I had an Avis reservation as a back up which I finally didn't need but I remember the app didn't let me cancel the reservation anymore even though it was an hour before pick up time. Wanted to do the same now and obviously won't do it since Avis would only be my second choice if something else goes wrong.
And if the app doesn't let me cancel last minute I surely don't want to pay a no show fee.
