I wouldn’t mind a two day stay in Abu Dabai, and Etihad (as a state airline) would normally oblige. But how do I make this happen on AA award travel? I'm stingy with my miles, so would rather not book multi-cities. Should I just book this paid, directly with Etihad, to get an easy extended layover?
AA does not allow stopovers on any awards. So in order to book that with AA miles you would need to book 2 awards, LIS-AUH + AUH-KUL.

You don't say whether you're looking for economy or business, but the price difference for booking 2 awards isn't that much more if the stopover is something you really want to do. In economy it would be an extra 10k miles, while in business it would only be an additional 7.5k.

And it's really a personal decision of whether you would rather book paid flights from EY with an included stopover, or book the awards with AA.
