Has anyone ever cancelled a ticket by mistake and then still go to the ticket counter the day of travel and explain that you didn't know that your ticket was cancelled and you don't know how but can they restore the original ticket?

Will the airline restore the original ticket with no additional cost or will they make you purchase a new ticket?
