A plug door gets the benefit of cabin pressure and helps to seal the cabin.
I would not blame maintenance - they are not going to remove seats and interior panels to inspect bolts. Maybe they will now.
Long term these plug panels may be an issue. Boeing may have to redesign and retrofit to make it a plug door (instead of door plug).
Or maybe airlines will need to remove seats and make this a real emergency exit door.
Review the second Chris Brady video. The plug is held sealed by differential pressure pushing it against the 12 stop fittings. The four fasteners are just to keep it located against the fittings and don’t carry any of the pressure load, just a small load from the springs.
Replacing the plug with a functional door leaves the load on the same stop fittings and adds all the complexity and failure modes of a mechanical door plus slide.
